WHY STANDARDIZATION MATTERS

Elevating Trust, Protecting Homeowners, and Advancing Our Industry

At the Professional Remodeling Collective, we believe the path to lasting change and a truly professional remodeling industry begins with one word: standardization.

Remodeling is one of the most complex and personal service industries in America—yet it remains largely unregulated, fragmented, and inconsistent. This has led to uneven quality, risk for consumers, and limited accountability. To raise the bar, we are working to develop industry-wide consensus standards that prioritize safety, professionalism, and quality across all remodeling sectors.

What Is Standardization?

Standardization means creating a shared framework—agreed upon by industry experts, remodelers, educators, and consumers—that defines what good remodeling looks like. It provides common language, expectations, and best practices that ensure consistency, transparency, and confidence in the remodeling process.

We follow the accredited consensus-building process outlined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to ensure that every standard we develop is built on openness, balance, due process, and stakeholder engagement.

Why It Matters

Standardization is essential for:

Protecting homeowners with clear, enforceable expectations

Improving safety for clients and jobsite professionals

Reducing risk through better quality control and regulatory alignment

Enhancing credibility of remodelers through defined professional benchmarks

Encouraging innovation with consistent foundations and continuous improvement

Supporting workforce training through recognized, skill-based frameworks

PRC Standards Under Development

We are actively building nationally recognized standards that support both the public and the professionals who serve them:

  • Women-Led Households: Guidelines for the Remodeling Industry
Promoting inclusive, respectful service for women-led homes.
  • Remodeling Experience Guidelines for Design Firms, General Contractors, and Customers
Clarifying expectations, roles, and communication across the customer journey.
  • Remodeling General Contractor Licensing Guidelines
Establishing consistent, fair, and trustworthy licensing practices for remodelers.

These standards are designed not just to regulate, but to empower—creating a remodeling industry that works better for everyone.

What’s Next?

We invite remodelers, architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, and homeowners to participate in shaping these standards. Through workshops, public comment periods, and committee engagement, we are building a future where professional remodeling means trust, excellence, and consistency—no matter where you live or who you hire.

Standardization is not red tape. It’s the blueprint for a stronger industry.

Join us in leading the transformation. The future of remodeling starts here—with standards that raise us all.
